Gum Disease Treatment
The periodontal disease or gum disease treatment you receive will depend on the severity of the condition. Whatever treatment you and your specialist decide on, the goal is to both control infection and reverse existing damage.Â
Some of the gum disease treatment options you can receive from Mid Peninsula Dental Specialists include; scaling and root planing, LANAP™ laser gum surgery, pocket reduction surgery, and guided bone and tissue regeneration.
Dental Implants
Dental implants come with many unique benefits, including the longevity of the implant device, the ease of maintenance, and the strength and durability of the implant.Â
Implants are the closest you can get to the form and function of your natural teeth with a dental reconstruction. Not only do they look natural, but the implant also helps preserve your jawbone and gum tissue which is vital to your overall oral health.
Gum Recession Treatment
When gum tissue begins to pull away from the teeth, gaps can form that allow bacteria to collect and cause infection. Gum recession can sneak up on you and often isn’t noticeable until you begin experiencing sensitivity.Â
Like gum disease, gum recession can be treated with a deep cleaning treatment such as scaling and planing. With more serious cases of gum recession, gum surgery may be necessary.
Gum Surgeries
When surgery is required to treat gum recession, there are several surgical options. The first is open flap scaling and root planing. Similar to the non-surgical version, by surgically moving the gum tissue, the cleaning is able to reach even more of the bacteria’s hiding places. When the gum tissue is replaced, the gaps between the gums and teeth are also reduced.Â
Another surgical option is gum grafting. While there are several versions of this treatment, the basic procedure involves taking a piece of tissue from elsewhere in your mouth and then grafting it to the problem area, providing additional protection and coverage.
Teeth Cleaning
You’re probably familiar with the regular teeth cleaning procedures recommended twice yearly. Typically performed by a dental hygiene professional, these cleanings remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar from your teeth. A dental polishing procedure is often performed as well.Â
A periodontal deep cleaning is similar but is usually performed in order to treat problems with your oral health — rather than for prevention, like standard cleanings. This deep cleaning may include scaling and root planing, and other treatments that remove bacteria from under the gum line.
