Dental Crowns and Bridges

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a custom-made covering for your tooth. Tooth crowns, or tooth caps, are used when the damage to the tooth is too extensive to be repaired by a filling. When a tooth is severely damaged by decay or injury, a crown can be used to cover and protect the tooth after the damage is removed.

Once the procedure is completed, you’re left with a tooth that looks and feels like your natural teeth. That’s because we custom-make porcelain crowns to match the color of your neighboring teeth, allowing them to seamlessly blend into your smile.

Benefits of dental crowns

Dental crowns don’t require any special care or maintenance. You simply need to brush and floss your crowns along with your other teeth, as part of your regular dental hygiene routine.

Because crowns can repair serious damage, they may be used to address problem teeth that have been unsightly or uncomfortable for a while — restoring not just the function of your teeth, but also your confidence in your appearance.

At Mid-Peninsula Dental Specialists, our team can handle the whole process of your restoration with a dental crown, from evaluation to installation of the permanent crown.

When is a tooth crown needed?

A tooth crown, or dental crown, is needed when a tooth is damaged beyond what a filling can repair. Dental crowns are also used to help protect other dental work, such as root canals, or in conjunction with restorations such as dental implants.

A dental crown makes sure that what remains of your natural tooth and tooth root is protected from further damage while blending seamlessly with the rest of your teeth.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a restoration option for a missing tooth that relies on anchors to the neighboring teeth. Often anchored with dental crowns, a dental bridge or tooth bridge fills the gap where a tooth was lost, restoring appearance and function.

A dental bridge may also be anchored to dental implants rather than crowns when multiple teeth need to be replaced.

Benefits of dental bridges

Gaps left by missing teeth can cause a variety of problems and impact your overall dental health. When a tooth is missing, the other teeth may shift in place, potentially causing gaps or overlaps. Each of these stress points may lead to additional tooth damage. A missing tooth can also make the other teeth work harder, leading to wear and tear or additional damage. By replacing a missing tooth with a tooth bridge, these problems can be avoided.

Like our porcelain crowns, dental bridges are custom made to fit your mouth which means they’ll be comfortable and look natural.

When is a tooth bridge needed?

A dental bridge is needed when one or more teeth are missing, and when you’ve decided along with our dental care team that a bridge is the best restorative option for you.

Dental bridges vs. implants

Dental implants are often considered the best solution for missing teeth. Because a dental implant restores not just the crown of the tooth, but also the root, there are health benefits to your jaw and gums as well as to your other teeth.

Sometimes, a dental implant isn’t the right fit for you or your situation. In cases where there isn’t enough healthy jawbone for the implant, or when oral surgery is too great a risk, a dental bridge may be the best restoration option.

Deciding on the best way to care for your teeth is a personal decision, and our team is ready to support you in making the right choice for your health and your lifestyle.

Happy Patients

Dr Beckstead is amazing. I had partial bone loss around one of my teeth and three dentists think that I won't be able to keep it, but Dr Beckstead performed one surgery and saved my tooth. It has been over two years since the surgery and I have not had any more issues with that tooth.

I'm actually looking forward to my next prophylaxis. That's a teeth cleaning, and I never would have believed I'd say such a thing. I want to give a special shout out to Cindy, who did a fantastic job on my teeth AND gave me the tools and knowledge to nip gum disease in the bud. Have you ever heard of a Sulcabrush? I have one now, and it's awesome. Look it up.

Dr. Beckstead and his entire team are exceptional. They provided kind, informative and top-notch care every step of the way. My nerves were immediately calmed when I entered the office and I realized that I was in the caring and experienced care of true professionals. The procedure was flawless, the outcome was terrific and the entire process was pain-free (in every way!).
